- Take 1/4 tsp baking soda

In this recipe, I have used equal amount of ragi flour (Nachni in Hindi, finger millet in English), unroasted suji/ Bombay rava/ Semolina along with curd, baking soda and salt. Ragi Rava Idli - a quick, no grind, no fermentation idlis are made with ragi aka finger millet and sooji/rava (cream of wheat). I have already posted rava idli recipe a while ago, last week I have tried adding ragi flour while making rava idlis. It turned out so good and everyone at home loved it:) This ragi rava idli can be a quick and breakfast option for babies and kids, it can be given to.
Steps to make Ragi vegetable idli (for kids):
- Wash and soak urad dal and rice separately for 4-5 hours. - Remove excess water from the urad dal and grind it finely using less water, also remove the excess water from the rice and using less water, grind it a little thicker.
- Mix rice paste, urad dal paste and ragi aata and prepare a thick batter without any lumps, keep it in a big bowl and leave it covered for 10-12 hours for fermentation. - Add baking soda and salt to the fermented batter. Add little water if mixture is too thick (make it like a cake batter).
- Heat ghee in a kadahi. Add black mustard seeds and curry leaves. Stir fry all veggies for 2-3 minutes adding little salt on medium flame.
- Mix cooked veggies in the fermented batter and add coriander leaves, green chillies and ginger. Put it in a steamer. Steam for 15-20 minutes and idlis are ready. Serve with coconut chutney and sambhar.
I had this ragi soup for my dinner mixed up with one spoonful of cooked brown rice. I must say that it turned out to be such a yummy soup. This ragi soup can also be used as side dish for dosa/ idli/chapathi or even rice for kids. Its best for kids with all the nutrients loaded. A tooth pick inserted in the center of the ragi idli should come out clean and not be sticky.
