This Punjabi spicy mixed dal can be prepared easily and quickly, but remember to soak them together for an hour to ensure uniform cooking. Instructions to make Garlic Spiced Dal:
  1. Mix the Dal and Water in a saucepan and allow to steam for 7 whistles in a cooker. This can be combined with prep for the rice also.
  2. Mix the dal till it is completely fluid. Add more water if needed. Add a spoon of turmeric powder. Bring this mixture to a boil and then cover with a lid.
  3. In a small pan, heat some oil and add the garlic. Fry till brown.
  4. Turn off the flame and add the dried chilli (each chilli broken in 2 pieces). Stir for a while to mix the flavours.
  5. Add the fried mixture to the Dal and cover with lid for 5min to allow the flavours to permeate the dal.

Masoor dal is a must in an everyday menu in almost every Bengali house. Whisk dal to amalgamate lentils and sweet potatoes. If dal is too soupy, increase heat and cook for a little longer. To serve, place dal in a serving bowl and sprinkle with chopped cilantro. If desired, shave thin strips of fresh coconut on top.
